Salvation Instructions

It is normal for people to compare themselves against others and often people question why they need salvation when they are ‘as good’ as many Christians they know. Sadly, this is often true but also irrelevant as the Bible claims that none of us meet God’s minimum standards:

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one. (Romans 3:10)

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

The Old Testament goes further describing all of us as filthy rags (Psalms 14:3, Isaiah 64:6), which is actually a pleasant translation. The original Hebrew suggests a bloody garment so thoroughly soiled that it cannot be salvaged and is destined for the trash heap. Therefore, whether one of us is better than another is immaterial, we all fall horribly short of being acceptable to God. Unfortunately, there are consequences for sin. These are seen historically in our separation from God in the Garden of Eden, the flood of Noah, and the curses we live under. It is also impacts our lives directly as we must pay the ultimate price for it:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Our condition is dire that there is nothing we do, no work we can perform, and no deed we can do to correct it:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Fortunately as these verses show, God provided the gift of live to overcome our condition. While there is an extensive legal basis for this gift, it is summed up in the following verses:

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Romans 10:9)

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)

These verses teach that salvation is a freely accepted gift while death and damnation are payments already earned. People receive this gift by believing in their heart and confessing with their mouth that God raised Jesus from the dead. People must confess Jesus before others for Jesus to confess them before his Father in heaven, and everyone denying Jesus will likewise be denied by him (Matthew 10:32-33). Everyone ashamed of Jesus will likewise find him ashamed of them (Mark 8:38). Only through the acceptance of this gift can people get eternal life and stand unashamed and unafraid before Jesus’ judgment seat.

Sound simple? Maybe, too simple? Well, yes it is simple; but that is the point. God so dearly wants us to be with him that he paid the full price for our redemption and made it easy for our account to wiped clean. Unfortunately, pride is so powerful that it prevents most people from reaching out to God to request this gift. If you haven’t already received this gift, please believe that God has raised Jesus from the dead, take the time to pray and ask Jesus to forgive you, and then let people know what Jesus has done for you!
