A second agricultural depiction of Israel, Hosea’s fig tree (Hosea 9:10), is featured prominently in many prophetic passages. Perhaps its most famous application occurred when seeking relief from hunger, Jesus came upon an unproductive fig tree:

The next two allegorical depictions of Israel draw on agricultural images to illustrate God’s reasonable expectations for His wife to produce regular harvests of spiritual fruits, her actual yields, and God’s attempts to maximize these harvests. Isaiah 5:1-4 shows God attempting to grow premium grapes from His vineyard:

Besides calling Israel an unfaithful wife, God calls Israel dross – the worthless leftover impurities from metal refinement. They are not precious metal tainted with impurities (part good and part bad) but they are the impurities (virtually all bad). Ezekiel 22:17-22 shows God’s dross condemnations and judgments:
